Welcome to ‘Me Like Hockey’, a blog about this aging jock’s first experience with playing hockey.
In just over a month from now I will be stepping out on to the ice at McNabb Arena in downtown Ottawa for the first night of a Hockey for Adult Beginners Course.
And it’s about damn time. After years of jockdom that has involved a lot of sports, it is time I laced ‘em up and honoured the birth rite this great nation has bestowed on me.
Sure, I have played the odd game of shinny each winter and the theme song from Hockey Night In Canada always produces a small lump in my throat every Saturday night, but I have never ever had the equipment on in an indoor arena with the full intent of actually playing (and learning to play) hockey.
But playing is one part of it.
The other part is I want to experience the game and all the little things which help tie it into the fabric of this country. From the steps along the rubber mat to the gate to the rattle of the puck along the edge of the boards to the god awful smell of a hockey bag, I just want to know the game more than I do.
Note that I probably suck just marginally less than you. I’ve skated since a kid but only started playing hockey as an adult. I’m a hack at it, but love sounds, the smell, the feel and the rare good move.
I admire your pluck and am impressed that your young family is OK with allowing you the time to indulge this unusual desire.
All the best at “school” and I’ll be looking for tidbits to apply to my game.
Here’s one for you: “Bend your knees more” This athletical advice is universal and always has a positive effect, no matter the sport. Remember you heard it here first.
