You always hear how expensive hockey is.
Well, let me be another one to tell you that it is friggin’ expensive.
But you really need to ante up for yourself to get an idea how quickly the prices add up.
Of course, buying used equipment is an option. But what buying used does is merely bring the bill down from ‘outrageously expensive’ to just ‘expensive.’
Here’s a rough breakdown of my equipment purchases.
- The used equipment I did manage to buy were my pants, shoulder and elbow pads, and shin guards. All of which came to just over $90.00. Helping bring that price down were the skates I traded in at the used sporting goods shop.
- The big ticket brand new stuff I bought were gloves, helmet and skates. The gloves were actually $200 ones which were marked down to $80. So I scored there.
- My Nike-Bauer helmet as $110.
- And my incredibly awesome pair of Easton Synergy 777 skates were $299. I’ll write more about purchasing my skates in an upcoming post.
- Where I found the money really starts adding up is in all the other little things. After you get the big essentials you might be tempted to think you’re home free. But man, the bag, stick (and I am not talking composite here), under garments, socks, jersey, cup, water bottle, tape, skate guards and soakies can easily add up to be a bigger purchase than your skates.
As you can see, the tally adds up. And so you know, I haven’t had the balls to actually add up the numbers!
