Class #2

Last night was awesome!

Last night was what I signed up for!

The pylons were out for full-length skating and puck handling drills and it was just a great, great workout. Sure, I left one of my lungs out on the ice, but what a great workout it was.

Here are some other thoughts…

  1. I wasn’t the only one who decided that their warmup would be better spent practicing their stops in the centre of the ice rather than doing laps!
  2. I did take some shots during warmup. I never once got the puck off the ice. I guess shooting with a tennis ball on the road is a different sort of thing.
  3. How did the Wayner keep his jersey tucked into his hip? Can anyone pass along any tips?
  4. During some puck and stick handling drills, a coach pointed out that I should cut my stick down a bit. If I make that adjustment I’ll be lower down on the stick and much more stronger on the puck, he said. Sounds good to me as I anything that will help me emulate Mike Fisher is welcomed.
  5. During stopping drills, the lead coach passed along this tip: it all starts with the head. Well, actually that’s the third step in the process after coming out off your crouch and straightening your legs. But he said to help practice stopping, focus on looking to the side you want to be facing. And then it is a matter of your shoulders and hips following your head.

That’s it for now.

A note about ‘The Rocket’

A few people have asked me what's up with the image at the top of the page. Well, it's an image courtesy of Marc Audet. Along with being a weird hybrid Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators fan, he is also one of the region's top illustrators. You can check out more of his work at Rocket 57
