Hello, I am Allen, a 38-year old aging jock in Ottawa, Canada.
‘Me Like Hockey’ is my account of my first winter of playing hockey.
Born and raised in downtown Toronto, I have always followed the sport via the ups and mostly downs of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Countless recesses were spent emulating the greats at Church and Carlton. Sittler scores! Oh! What a save from Palmateer! Salming!
My first NHL game was at Maple Leaf Gardens when Rick Vaive became the first Leaf to score 50 in a season.
University took me to Ottawa where, slowly, over time the Blue and White changed into Red, Black, and White.
And while things haven’t always been great…
…and haven’t always gone the way they should have…
all those utterly heart breaking losses certainly made last spring that much sweeter.
Dude, nice to see you finally doing what every red-blooded Canuck male should do….strap on the blades and smash some frozen rubber across the ice with a hockey stick.

Way to go…I’m pretty much where you were a few months ago. I finally made it on the ice to play for the first time at the age of 43. Played 3 times so far and am loving it.
Been playing some drop in hockey. Haven’t been able to find a beginner program close to me. But I’m happy to be able to play with guys that throw me a sympathy pass from time to time and actually let me shoot when I can get near the net.
Best of luck to ya!
Dan
Hi,
Great blog. What programme is this you are taking? Through whom? Sounds great.
